5 Useful Things for October

5 Useful Things

Welcome to our October edition of 5 Useful Things. In these mid monthly emails we share with you 5 useful things we have come across during our work and personal time that we hope you will enjoy.

This month we have a variety of discoveries that we hope you will get some value from. If you have stumbled across something that you think our readers would find useful, please let us know!

1. Something to Read

The Data Centre isn’t the Problem, Bad Architecture Is

As demand for data centres continues to grow, can architects help reduce their environmental impact and make them more beneficial to their surroundings?

This interesting article explores how data centres could be integrated into buildings, located underground and even used to provide heating for nearby homes and greenhouses. A thought-provoking look at the role architecture could play in the future of our digital infrastructure.

2. Something to Watch

How to Use Colour in Interior Design

Ever wondered why some colour combinations just work? Interior designer Noah Daniel explores the basics of colour theory, how colours interact and how to create thoughtful palettes for interior spaces. A lovely watch for anyone looking for a little colour inspiration or wanting to approach colour choices with more confidence.

3. Something to Admire

The Boathouse

This beautiful loch-side boathouse by WT Architecture has been carefully refurbished and extended to create a peaceful retreat surrounded by woodland.

With its timber-clad studio, warm interiors and wonderful views across the water, it is a lovely example of how a contemporary addition can sit comfortably alongside an existing building and its natural surroundings.

4. Something to Download

Book of Shapes

Need a little graphic inspiration? Book of Shapes is a collection of minimal, customisable geometric patterns that you can experiment with and make your own.

Have a play with the different shapes and patterns to create something unique for your next presentation, portfolio or design project.

5. Something Else to Watch

Tokyo: The City of Luxury Architecture

Take a virtual architectural tour of Tokyo's Ginza and Omotesando neighbourhoods, where luxury fashion meets some of the world's most striking contemporary architecture.

Explore buildings by renowned architects including Renzo Piano, Kengo Kuma and Toyo Ito, and enjoy some wonderful views of the Tokyo skyline along the way.

We hope you find something here that perhaps you haven't stumbled across before. We'll continue to keep our eyes open to anything we think you will find useful or enjoy, and keep you updated every month with our 5 Useful Things.

This month's selection comes from Emma. Thank you, as always, for reading our emails and showing us your love and support. It really means a lot.

All our best,

Emma and the First In Architecture Team

FIA Journal A good friend of mine is a physiotherapist. She spends her days assisting people to navigate their new lives after a spinal cord injury, working out how to live within the world around them – including in their own homes – once their ability and independence have changed. Built for Someone, Not Just Anyone Hello Reader, I'm really lucky to get some insight from her into the nuances and struggles her clients face when they're adapting to their new circumstances, and what she sees...

FIA Journal I sat down to write an email about focus and made it about ninety seconds before getting distracted. There's a joke in there somewhere. It's almost too obvious to make. But it did rather prove the point. My attention span isn't what it used to be, and lately I've been thinking seriously about what I can do to change that. What I’m Doing About My Shrinking Attention Span Hello Reader, September always feels like the start of something, even years after my studying days. If you're...
