5 Useful Things for September

5 Useful Things

Welcome to our September edition of 5 Useful Things. In these mid monthly emails we share with you 5 useful things we have come across during our work and personal time that we hope you will enjoy.

This month we have a variety of discoveries that we hope you will get some value from. If you have stumbled across something that you think our readers would find useful, please let us know!

1. Something to Watch

The UK's £49BN Heathrow Gamble

Heathrow’s proposed expansion is one of the UK’s biggest and most controversial infrastructure projects. This video takes a closer look at the £49 billion plans, the challenges of building a third runway and the wider question of whether such a vast investment can really deliver what is being promised.

2. Something to Try

Visoid AI Rendering

Visoid is an AI rendering tool aimed at architects and designers, helping turn simple 3D views into polished visualisations quickly. It is worth a look if you want to experiment with faster concept renders without spending hours on a traditional rendering workflow.

3. Something to Learn

Archademia

Our friends at Archademia have created a really useful online learning platform for architecture students and professionals. Their courses cover software, visualisation, technical design and professional practice, alongside downloadable resources, tools, mentoring and a supportive community.

4. Something to Read

Architecture for Introverts

As someone who is definitely a bit of an introvert, this one caught my attention straight away. Architizer has rounded up a collection of buildings designed around retreat, privacy and a little more breathing space — a fun theme, but also an interesting look at how architecture can respond to different ways of living.

5. Something to Browse

Detail Library

Detail Library, our construction detailing platform, now has more than 700 construction details, with new content added regularly. If you spend too much time redrawing standard junctions or researching how to resolve common construction details, the library is designed to help you work faster and with more confidence.

We hope you find something here that perhaps you haven't stumbled across before. We'll continue to keep our eyes open to anything we think you will find useful or enjoy, and keep you updated every month with our 5 Useful Things.

This month's selection comes from Emma. Thank you, as always, for reading our emails and showing us your love and support. It really means a lot.

All our best,

Emma and the First In Architecture Team

FIA Journal A good friend of mine is a physiotherapist. She spends her days assisting people to navigate their new lives after a spinal cord injury, working out how to live within the world around them – including in their own homes – once their ability and independence have changed. Built for Someone, Not Just Anyone Hello Reader, I'm really lucky to get some insight from her into the nuances and struggles her clients face when they're adapting to their new circumstances, and what she sees...

FIA Journal I sat down to write an email about focus and made it about ninety seconds before getting distracted. There's a joke in there somewhere. It's almost too obvious to make. But it did rather prove the point. My attention span isn't what it used to be, and lately I've been thinking seriously about what I can do to change that. What I’m Doing About My Shrinking Attention Span Hello Reader, September always feels like the start of something, even years after my studying days. If you're...
